Escaping into the world of cinema

An excuse to share stills from my favourite films

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

Following on from my previous post about creating a staycation, I thought I would share my favourite films that I enjoy escaping into. Not only are these films visually stunning, but they also have a certain magical aura about them (if not literal magic in them at times). The following films I’ve put into four categories to suit whatever mood you might be in.

Fantasy galore

The unapologetically full on fantasy film. All feature some sort of mythical being and potentially a witch or two. I allow myself to fully indulge my inner child with these films. Whilst most are not directly from my childhood (bar Harry Potter) they would have definitely have captured my imagination as one. These are the ultimate comfort watches for me.

Song of the Sea (2014)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

The Secret of Moonacre (2008)

Eerily unsettling

Moving away from full fantasy, this selection of films all are fairly unsettling if not downright creepy. These films speak to me as someone who has been through female adolescence and remember the complexities of it. Cue dreamlike sequences, the occasional strange old crone and strange imagery, all of which will haunt you for a long while afterwards.

Innocence (2004)

Heavenly Creatures (1994)

Hausu (1977)

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)

Picnic at Hanging Rock

Quirky characters

I love a good film with plenty of quirky characters. Films about collectors, creatives and romantics who inhabit a world that bit more whimsical than our own. I find so much joy in admiring the work that goes into the sets and in particular the props. Things like book dust jackets, odd collections and brief hat phases. I can only dream to live in world so beautifully designed.

Submarine (2010)

Everything is Illuminated (2005)

Dear Lemon Lima (2009)

Amelie (2001)

All my great book covers in Gentleman Broncos (2009)

Full of charm

For all other films that just don’t quite fit in the other categories, these are just a list of films I just find completely charming.

The Secret Garden (1993)

Mermaids (1990)

The Illusionist (2010)

Little Women (1994)

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
